Budgies Care: Cages, Accessories, Toys,
Perches, etc.
Cages
According to my vets (or my budgies vets), the minimum size of cage for
budgerigar (for one bird) is: 24" x 24" x 24" and the bar
spacing 1/4 inch and the perch size: 1/2 inch.
Some pet stores offer a very small cage for beginners. Some of them are
even labeled "parakeet cages". Big mistake! The bigger cage- the better for
budgie. Your bird should be able to fully extend his wings in all
directions. Spaces between bars on a cage should not allow the budgie
to squeeze his head through.
Good cage has a door, that opens with one side, so your budgie can easy go
in and out (look at the first picture on the right- our budgies cage).
Important thing is also where you place this cage. Budgie is a very social
bird and he can't be left in a dark corner or in a place when people go
occasionally only. Better choice is living room, family room, maybe home
office, when you and your family spend most time. Cage should be placed
against the wall, so your budgie can feel secure. Don't put it
in the floor- those animals live in their wild nature on trees!
Cage Accessories
The
most important are containers for food and water. Cage usually comes with
a set of cups for seeds and water. That's basic, but sometimes it's worth
to improve accessories for our birds.
The container for pellets and seeds on the second picture (behind Coconut)
stays clean inside. Water container should be placed in position to avoid droppings and food
crumbs, but not to high, so your budgie can easy reach it.
Your budgie should have container with fresh
water in his cage/aviary. You have to absolutely keep food and water
containers clean to
avoid breeding bacteria.
Perches
It may seem like just a
stick, but the type of perches used in the cage are an important part of
keeping your bird healthy and fit. Always provide perches of varying
diameters and different materials: wood, rope, plastic and natural
branches.
One of my Munchkins (Blues) seem to like destroying wood perches by
slowly chewing them. So each time she is done with it I have to buy another one... They all enjoy rope-spiral perch outside their cage
(third picture on the right).
Toys
You should provide your budgie with "birdie proof" toys. Budgies love
mirrors, bells, swings, plastic toys. Toys keep birds occupied. You should plan to put some toys
inside and outside the budgies cage and give them play gym or/and climbing
or hanging ropes to keep them happy. On almost all of my budgies pictures,
there are their toys. Those birds need something to do, destroy and play
with. To make sure your budgie is not bored- rotate toys once a week.

Picture above: my Budgies Kingdom! On
the right side: cage with necessary accessories: container for
water and two containers for pellets and seeds.
Also inside wood perches and couple of toys.
On the left side: Play gym, and above it: hanging spiral-rope with my
females: Blueberry and Lemon. On top of the cage sitting my two males:
Mango and Coco. Above them hanging toys.

The container for pellets and seeds on the picture (behind Coconut)
stays clean inside.

Another example of container in cage. Stays clean and my budgies love
to dig seeds among the pellets. Click to see how Mango enjoys it:)

Spiral-rope perch and my three budgies
on it: Mango (as a flock leader always on top), Lemon (his girlfriend
close to him) and Coconut. Blueberry took a nap in the cage at that
time...

Budgies cage after some changes: no
spiral rope- instead board with their toys. On the bigger picture, you can see
Coco and Mango inside their cage and Blues with Plum above. |
